New study finds physical activity can reduce cancer risk

The study showed that a one-point increase in the WCRF / AICR score was associated with a 12% reduction in overall cancer risk; 14% less breast cancer and 12% less prostate cancer.

 

Healthy eating and non-alcoholic physical activity can help reduce the overall risk of cancer and reduce the risk of breast, prostate and colon cancer. Researchers from the American Association for Cancer Research have analyzed nutritional values that have shown the greatest benefit of a diet that reduces alcohol and reduces cancer risk.

 

The researchers estimated that in developed countries about 35% of breast cancer cases and 45% of colorectal cancers could be prevented by better adherence to dietary recommendations. Therefore, it is very important to study the role of nutrition in cancer prevention.

 

Three validated nutritional recommendations were evaluated in this study: the WCRF / AICR score; the alternative index of healthy nutrition; and the result of the French Nutrition and Health Program and a relatively new index, the MEDI-LITE score, which measures adherence to a Mediterranean diet.

 

The researchers found that all diets were associated with a reduced risk, but the WCRF / AICR recommendations, which were developed specifically for cancer screening, were most closely linked to mitigation.

 

Between May 2009 and January 1, 2017, 1,489 cases of cancer were diagnosed in study participants, including 488 breast cancers, 222 prostate cancers and 118 colorectal cancers. The researchers used Cox multivariate proportional risk models to characterize the associations between each nutritional value and cancer risk.

 

The study showed that a one-point increase in the WCRF / AICR score was associated with a 12% reduction in overall cancer risk; 14% less breast cancer and 12% less prostate cancer.

 

Other diets were associated with less cancer risk, but the WCRF / AICR index showed greater statistical strength and predictive power, Srour and Touvier said.

 

For this reason, and because the other three diets were not specifically designed for cancer screening, researchers performed additional analyzes on the WCRF / AICR scores, with some components skipped assessing the relative importance of each diet.

 

This underlines the role of a healthy lifestyle in general: diet and physical activity and alcohol prevention in cancer prevention. Therefore, it is important to consider that every lifestyle factor plays a role and that it is never too late to adopt a healthy lifestyle, “says researcher Bernard Srour, whose findings are published in the Journal of Cancer Research.
